Defining the street style trends of Milan Fashion Week

Prada, Bottega Veneta, Ferragamo, Max Mara, Tom Ford, Gucci, and other top brands gather at Milan Fashion Week, where fashion elites converge, presenting outfits each season at a very high standard. Nevertheless, the street style before Parisian arrivals never disappoints — never. This time is no exception.

Milan’s street style always encompasses everything, from bold and luxurious to completely casual and timeless. Many invited guests attending fashion shows are seen wearing at least one item from any brand event they’ve attended. Impeccable tailoring hides subtle details, along with plenty of streetwise touches — think shorts and pure detailing. As a result, the biannual gathering always brings forth a range of creative looks centered around items we’ve saved up for months to buy from last season’s shows, whether it’s a pair of satin Prada heels or a Ferragamo handbag. Essentially, it’s a fashionista’s treasure trove, and as Milan’s top fan, I’m here to share the most valuable discoveries in outdoor fashion this week before Paris steals the spotlight. Scroll down to see which seven trends caused the biggest stir at the 2024 Milan Autumn/Winter Fashion Show (which had a lot of rain).

Satin’s Touch

When I think of heavy satin, I always recall a mini skirt hem from the Prada 22 Spring/Summer collection, but following the previous season’s seemingly endless use of this fabric — appearing in brands like Altuzarra, Prada, Sportmax, Tory Burch, and more — this mini chariot has some competition. This was most apparent during Milan Fashion Week, where, apart from Sportmax and Prada, dangerously beautiful satin dresses, shoes, and more were fully on display.

In the realm of men’s tailoring, especially as temperatures drop and sunlight wanes, street style mavens are donning big, bold coats at this season’s fashion shows. Gray remains a popular choice, but black, brown, and camel hues are equally significant.

Official Announcement: The era of tiny sunglasses that barely cover the eyes, let alone protect them from sunlight, is officially over. In its place, we have a variety of shapes and sizes of oversized alternatives, ranging from cat-eye to aviator styles. In Milan, despite the somewhat overcast sky, attendees of the shows still flocked out of hotels in droves, venturing out with everyone donning shield-like sunglasses.
